Underground utilities, grading and concrete

We self-perform the core of a street and utility project with our own pipe, grading and concrete crews. That keeps quality and schedule in one set of hands, from the first trench to the last curb line.

Sanitary sewer, watermain and storm sewer

Underground utilities are the core of our business. We install new systems for growing communities and replace aging mains under existing streets, working to city standard plates, CEAM and MnDOT specifications.

  • Sanitary sewer: gravity mains, manholes, wyes and service connections
  • Watermain: mains, valves, hydrants, fittings and water services
  • Storm sewer: pipe, catch basins, structures, culverts and pond outlets
  • Conflicts: lowering and relocating existing utilities to make new work fit

Grading and site work

Our own grading crew builds the ground the street and utilities sit on, so earthwork and pipe crews run on one schedule.

  • Earthwork: common excavation, embankment and import or export
  • Subgrade: subgrade correction, muck excavation and select granular
  • Base: aggregate base placed and compacted to grade
  • Drainage: stormwater ponds, channels and outlet grading

GPS machine control

Our grading fleet runs on the Topcon GPS system with Komatsu intelligent machine control. Design surfaces go straight from the plans into the machines, so operators cut and fill to grade without waiting on stakes, and we check it as we go instead of after.

The result is a grading team that's hard to beat on accuracy and efficiency: fewer passes, less over-excavation and wasted material, and a finished subgrade and base that's right the first time. That means a better product for our clients and a schedule that holds.

Curb, gutter and concrete

Concrete is done in-house by a crew of 15+ finishers and laborers. The same division subcontracts to other prime contractors. See concrete for primes.

  • Slipform curb and gutter with our own Gomaco GT3600
  • Hand-formed concrete: radii, transitions, valley gutters and medians
  • Sidewalk and pedestrian ramps, including ADA ramps
  • Driveway aprons and small-area concrete paving

Street and utility reconstruction

Most of our municipal work is a complete rebuild: tear out the old street, replace what's under it, and put back a new street with curb, walks and pavement. Because we self-perform the utilities, grading and concrete, we control the sequence and the pace.

  • Removals of pavement, curb, walks and old utilities
  • New utilities, grading, base and concrete by our own crews
  • Paving, restoration and traffic control coordinated with trusted partners
  • Resident communication and access kept in place through construction
